This page maps the territory. The Scarborough home page lists every service on our run, while here we stay on the water side: what fails, who may fix it, who owns which pipe, and what cannot wait.

Why Water Pipes Leak, Split and Wear Out

A supply line develops a short list of faults: leaks at worn joints, corroded pipe, splits and bursts, failed braided hoses, and leaks hidden underground or inside a wall. Each fault has its own page and its own fix.

  1. Corrosion

    bay salt pushes past the foreshore onto meter boxes, outdoor taps and heater fittings several streets back, so joints age well ahead of their years.

  2. High water pressure

    a line running harder than it should splits old joints and weeps at fittings.

  3. Ground or root movement

    sandy coastal soil shifts, and roots work into the socket joints of older drains.

  4. Braided hoses

    a flexible connector under a sink or basin usually dies before the pipe does, and our flexi hose replacement page takes that job in full.

  5. Hidden leaks

    a concealed leak can sit under a driveway or inside a wall and waste thousands of litres a day. Our leak detection page explains how those get found.

Age matters too. Cottages around Mein Street and Turner Street date from the post-1935 building boom, and lead-based solder on brass fittings and copper pipe was still common across Australia until 1989. So older joints deserve a careful look before anything gets disturbed.

Occupational and Contractor Licences Explained

Regulated plumbing work, water pipe repairs included, must be done by a QBCC licensed plumber. The licence split behind that is simple once you see it.

Plumbers hold two licences: an occupational licence to do plumbing work, and a contractor licence to take jobs on as a business. The QBCC issues both.

The QBCC's online registers let you check two things before booking:

  • whether your plumber's licence is current;
  • whether a Form 4 has been registered for your address.

The paperwork then splits by job. Patching a broken pipe is minor work: licensed hands only, with no permit needed and no Form 4 lodged. Replacing the supply piping out to an existing house goes further.

That second job counts as notifiable work. Your plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC, and you get a copy for your records.

Who Fixes a Leak on Each Side of the Meter

Unitywater looks after the water main, the pipe running to your meter and the meter itself. Everything from the meter onto the property belongs to you, including leaks you cannot see.

Your meter sits in a small box flush with the ground, in the strip between the road and your boundary. That box marks the handover point, and the line from there to your fixtures is yours to maintain.

The law backs the split up. The Plumbing and Drainage Act requires an owner to do everything reasonable to keep plumbing and drainage sound and working. A known leak on your side of the boundary is not a job to leave dripping.

Units share the picture differently. One burst braided connector in a beachside flat can send water through the floor to the units below, so isolation comes first on any call there.

Scarborough Same Day Plumbing also works the shared-run side of that line, and our unit and townhouse page works through who fixes what when a scheme owns part of the plumbing.

When a Leak Becomes an Emergency

Water you cannot stop, a burst water service and a serious supply leak are emergencies. Slow drips and weeping fittings can wait for a booked visit.

The full urgent list:

  • water that will not stop, whichever tap you turn off;
  • water reaching a ceiling, a wall or an electrical outlet;
  • a burst water service, which our burst pipe repairs page takes on directly;
  • a serious leak on the supply line.

Rentals follow the same rules. The Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 puts a burst supply line and a serious leak on it on the emergency repair list, so a landlord cannot leave one waiting for a quieter week.

We're available 24/7 for the urgent ones, 7 days a week.

Water Pipe Questions Scarborough Owners Ask

Call (07) 3523 6484

Do you fix leaking water pipes in Scarborough?

Yes, a licensed plumber swaps out the damaged section, and patching a broken pipe counts as minor work under Queensland rules. Scarborough Same Day Plumbing cuts out the split, fits new pipe and tests the line before we go.

Can I fix a burst water pipe myself?

No, Queensland reserves pipe repairs for licensed plumbers, so a home owner cannot lawfully patch a supply line. The unregulated list stays short, and water pipe work is not on it.

What makes a water pipe split or start leaking?

Wear, corrosion, high pressure and roots or ground movement cause most of them. Salt air near the Scarborough foreshore ages brass fittings fast, and lead-based solder was still common until 1989, so old cottages hide weaker joints.

Which pipe faults count as an emergency?

Any water you cannot shut off, plus a burst supply line or a serious leak on it. On a Queensland rental, the 2008 tenancy Act lists both as emergency repairs. A slow drip at a fitting can hold until a scheduled visit.

How do I know if a leak is on my side of the meter?

Shut every tap in the house, then watch the meter dial. Movement with everything closed points to a leak on your side of the boundary. The leak detection page explains how hidden runs get traced.

Who is responsible for the pipe between the street and my water meter?

Unitywater owns everything up to and including the meter, so report a leak in that stretch straight to the utility. Every pipe past the meter onto the property falls to you as the owner.
